Things

Design at Lancaster actively responds to rapid changes in technology, complex societal challenges and the pressing need for new ways of thinking about the world. We foreground the designer’s ability to engage with the most difficult of problems, bringing individual and collective creativity together to propose and test new ways forward.

Closely linked to ImaginationLancaster, an exploratory design-led research centre at Lancaster University, our team enables people and organisations to engage with academia in dynamic and creative ways, giving time and space to imagine and explore possible futures.

Design Interactions Studio: Things

“We shape our tools then our tools shape us” Marshall McLuhan

This quote personifies how the introduction of new technologies can profoundly impact the social and cultural fabric of our lives in ways that were not considered during the creation of these technology. As the pace of new technologies advances, designers are being asked to find new ways of thinking about the potential impact of technology so that society is better prepared as they become established in our lives.

This studio provided an opportunity for us to experientially apply some theoretical considerations in developing design futures. To do this, we thought beyond the borders of ‘now’ and explored the potential futures of a particular emerging technology, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robots, biomimetic materials, virtual reality and augmented reality, and so forth. We then designed artefacts, or things, that made these possible futures real by imaging a point at which an emerging technology becomes domesticated and a part of everyday life. The studio helped us establish our ability to critically evaluate the full implications of particular futures. It also made us consider how we might practically represent such futures to an external audience such that the things we produced were both plausible and engaging.
